Bike to Work/School/Market Week May 28 – June 3, 2018

Tips, Tune-ups and Treats
In collaboration with the GoByBike BC campaign, the Creston & District Community Complex, the Creston Valley Cycling Club, and the MS Society Bike Challenge, the Creston Valley is participating in Bike to Work Week. Last year 44,000 participants registered at www.biketowork.ca in British Columbia.
As we localize the Creston Valley’s participation, we celebrate with cycling enthusiasts amidst Activity Base, Summit Outdoor Sport, School District 8, the Creston Valley Farmer’s Market and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Robert Unger of Summit Outdoor Sport has sold 6 bicycles in April and has been steadily providing tune up service, parts and equipment to his customers. As a cycling aficionado who has travelled great distances on his bike, Mr. Unger addresses the opening up of the cycling season by offering free Bicycle Commuting information at his store. “Human power is really important.” He reminds me. “Use low gears to save your bike’s drive train, own a light bike and don’t forget - there is nothing wrong with walking.”
Community members are encouraged to choose their bicycles for their main source of transportation during this week. Build a team, challenge your co-workers, organize your classroom or be a solo rider. If commuting isn’t possible for you, are you a store owner that considers where folks can park their bikes nearby? Does your gas station have working air hoses? Are you a motorist who is willing to share the road with cyclists?

One of my top reasons for cycling is the subtle wave that is exchanged between cyclists. There is some sense of belonging that cyclists achieve in passing and it’s this unwritten code that depicts in a brief exchange how, we are in this together. In addition to the benefits to health and wellness, meeting more neighbors, and reducing emissions, participants can register online to win cash, prizes, and a cycling trip for two across Portugal!

Participants must log kilometers for at least one trip that has been chosen to cycle instead of drive a motor vehicle to during Bike to Work, School, & Market Week, May 28 - June 3, 2018. For example, if you choose to ride a bike instead of drive a motor vehicle to work, school, the gym, run errands, meet a friend for coffee, etc., participants can enter the Exodus Prize Draw!

This grand prize includes economy class round trip airfare from the nearest international airport, hotel accommodations, a local leader and planned routes and itineraries with support vehicles to follow.

First time participants will also be entered into a prize draw to win a $250 gift card to the shop of their choice PLUS the team leader of that prize winner will ALSO win a $250 gift card to the shop of the team leader's choice. The MS Society and Activity Base will also be contributing draw prizes!

Expect to find Celebration Stations along Canyon Street, at your neighborhood school during the week and then at your Saturday Farmer’s Market, (after the 7th Annual ‘Just Tri-It’ Triathlon at the CDCC). Celebration Stations will serve cyclists Tips, Tune Ups and Treats as provided by volunteers from this growing Creston Valley cycling community.
