Local Government Challenge
District of Saanich challenges local governments to get the best participation during Bike to Work Week (May 28 – June3)
For Immediate ReleaseThursday, May 10, 2007
Victoria, BC. - The District of Saanich has issued a challenge to all Greater Victoria municipalities and the Capital Regional District (CRD) to see who can get the most staff cycling during Bike to Work Week. Saanich has also created a trophy for the winner of what has been dubbed the “Local Government Challenge”.
“The District of Saanich challenges the CRD and all municipalities”, stated Councillor Judy Brownoff of the District of Saanich at the Bike to Work Week countdown launch event on April 17, “your staff versus ours and we’ll see who wins!”
The challenge? To see which municipality can get the greatest number of people cycling during Bike to Work Week.
Municipalities that have formally accepted the challenge include:
- City of Victoria
- Township of Esquimalt
- Capital Regional District
- District of Oak Bay
- District of Central Saanich
- District of North Saanich
- City of Langford
- And of course, the District of Saanich.
“So far all contenders have registered at least one team. The City of Victoria has 7 teams and Saanich 5,” says Stephanie, “However, number of teams does not necessarily correlate with number of riders. What’s important for the challenge is that each municipality get the most cyclists based on total staff population.”
Bike to Work Week runs Monday May 28 – Sunday May 3 with fun “celebration stations” planned for each week day. Registration is free and done through the Bike to Work Week website at www.biketowork.ca. You can also contact the society at 920-5775.
