What is Bike to Work Week?

Bike to Work Week is a week long challenge that encourages you to ditch the car at home and pedal to work. Workplace teams compete for thousands of dollars in prizes and individuals can stop by the scheduled events to pick up food and beverage, prizes, resources, support and fun. We have many events planned throughout the week and beyond to make it fun, visible, and successful for everyone - from cycling pros to brand new riders!

2011 Schedule of Events

Bike to Work Week officially runs May 30 - June 5.

During the week cyclists display their participant stickers will receive free transit with their bikes and 10% off at Nancy O’s.

Saturday, May 14th

Bicycle Skill Share: Time to get those bikes ready for the road! Bring whatever tools and know-how you have to help people fix their bikes, or show up to work on or get help with your own bike. We’ll share what we know in a collaborative manner.Hosted by the 3rd Ave Collective. 12:30pm 1157 3rd Ave.

Sunday May 15th

Bike Swap:  Find a bike, sell a bike, join the fun! Drop off your used equipment in the morning and come by in the afternoon to see what’s available for purchase. Pick up your Bike to Work Week Team Leader package, and learn about the many activities the Prince George Cycling Club has planned for 2011. More info

Thursday, May 26th

Road Time Trails: Join an enthusiastic group of cyclists to test your speed in a 36.6km time trial. Riders must be insured through full PGCC membership. 6:00pm @ Nukko Lake Rd. More info

Friday, May 27th

Commuter Safety and Info Session: Come join us on your lunch break to learn the basics of safe riding in the city. Team Leaders can pick up their event packages. 12:00pm. 3rd Ave Collective. 1157 3rd Ave.

Critical Mass: A global party on two wheels to celebrate bicycling–a fast, friendly, clean, efficient, healthy, cheap, sensible, and fun way to get around the city. Critical Mass is a vision of a bike-friendly Prince George, a protest for better cycling facilities and against car culture, a mobile paean to bicycling’s joys, a merry ride through our neighborhoods with friends, and more– all rolled into one leisurely, convenient monthy ride. 5:30pm @ the Civic Centre Plaza. Occurs last Friday of every month.

Saturday, May 28th

Registration and Info booth: Pedal by our booth at the Prince George Farmers Market where we will have information about Bike to Work Week events and more. 8:00am – 2:00pm @ the Prince George Farmers Market (George and 3rd)

IMBA Canada Trail Building School: The Prince George Cycling Club is pleased to host the International Mountain Bicycling Association this weekend at the Pidherny Recreation area. Join us on Saturday for a mix of trail building lessons and hands-on field work. Lunch included. More info and registration.

Sunday, May 29th

Road Race: Sponsored by Summerside Sport & Cycle. Second event in the Prince George Cycling Club 2011 Race series. Riders must be insured through Full PGCC membership. 10:00am @ Blackburn Community Centre. More info.

IMBA Canada Trail Care Crew Group Ride and Hike: Join the Prince George Cycling Club and the Caledonia Ramblers for a group ride and hike in celebration of the recreation opportunities available at the Pidherny Recreation Area and a visit from IMBA (the International Mountain Bicycling Association). More info and registration.

Monday, May 30th – Bike to Work Week begins!

Kick-off breakfast: Pedal by to take part in the Bike to Work Week 2011 opening events. Free take-out breakfast and coffee (don’t forget your travel mug). Prizes, support, and fun. Sponsored by the City of Prince George. 7:30am – 10:30am @ City Hall

College Heights Celebration Station: Prizes, food, support and fun! Sponsored by Telus. 7:30am – 10:30am @ the cemetery trailhead (Cowart and Hwy 16)

Trail Building Night: Never been to Pidherny? Interested in learning what amazing recreation opportunities are available to downhill and XC cyclists? Join the weekly trail maintenance crew to learn more and to get a hands-on look at the Pidherny Recreation Areas. 6:00pm @ the gate at the bottom of Pidherny Road. Occurs every Monday during the cycling season.

Tuesday, May 31st

Uptown Celebration Station:  Prizes, food, support and fun! Sponsored by Northern Health. 7:30am – 10:30am @ Spruceland Shopping Centre.

Road Group Ride: Join a group of enthusiastic cyclists as the hit the streets and casual tour around Prince George. 6:30pm @ Cyclelogic (1443 3rd Ave). Occurs every Tuesday during cycling season.

Wednesday, June 1st

Gateway Celebration Station: Prizes, food, support and fun! Sponsored by PGAIR. 7:30am – 10:30am @ Stride & Glide Sports (1655 15th Ave).

Cross-Country Group Ride: Join a group of fun and casual cyclists as they hit the trails around Prince George. Riders must be insured through Basic PGCC membership. Contact Bill at 250-596-3434 for more info. Occurs every Wednesday during the cycling season.

Thursday, June 2nd

Downtown Celebration Station: Prizes, food, support and fun! Sponsored by Integris Credit Union 7:30am – 10:30am @ Community Gardens (7th and Victoria).

Friday, June 3rd

Saturday, June 4th

Wrap-up BBQ and Cycle Celebration: This Saturday at the Farmers Market is part of Bike to Work Week! Strap on your helmet and hop on your bike to join us for a celebration of two-wheeled transportation. All cyclists will receive a free burger made fresh from fresh local beef, and enjoy prizes, giveaways and fun. BBQ runs 10:00-2:00 and a bicycle demonstrations and contests will be held at 11:00. Decorate your bike for a chance to win! 

Sunday, June 5th – Bike to Work Week ends

Healthy Kids Day: The last day of Bike to Work Week is Healthy Kids Day! Take your kids out on a bike ride to celebrate! Check out all of the activities at the YMCA. More info
