BTW Cowichan - At Large: The family that bikes together...
The family that bikes together likes to be together. At least that is true in the case of the Haddad family.
Alex Haddad is chief organizer and “spokes”person of Cowichan Bike to Work Week. Daughters Nicole and Taci Haddad were among 27 cyclists who set off with Pop from the parking lot of Thrifty Foods (Duncan) Saturday morning.
Mom Juanita (who describes herself as “behind-the-scenes helper”) was waiting as the cyclists pedaled into the Farmers’ Market in Duncan city square to officially launch the event.
Yes, I know, Cowichan Bike to Work Week isn’t until next month but the committee is already gearing up for a recruitment and information campaign.
Fletcher’s Challenge: No, it has nothing to do with the late forestry giant.
It’s all about Duncan city councillor Paul Fletcher’s challenge to local politicians to ride a bike to work during the week of May 11.
Presumably that includes City of Duncan Mayor Phil Kent who also attended the launch (Since His Worship lives downtown that may not be as challenging as it sounds.)
Also spotted at Saturday’s launch: Sponsor/cyclists Will Arnold of Experience Cycling; Aaron Bichard and Katie Harris (Cowichan Recyclists); Tony Hoar (Tony’s Trailers); Maria Lauridsen (Vancouver Island University); Judy Stafford (Cowichan Green Community); committee members Fuzzy Charania and Hilary Huntley and riders Linda Hill, John Scull and Sandy McPherson.
P.S. Your own Cowichan News Leader Pictorial is one of 15 sponsors of the event.
Charity begins at home: A tip of the hat to Mill Bay Lions Club for generously donating $900 to Vancouver Island Regional Library, South Cowichan Branch in Mill Bay.
Judy Baxter, manager of the South Cowichan branch says the money will buy two special machines called Victor Readers which will be used to play audio books for visually impaired customers unable to read regular print.
