Interesting facts: I am the treasurer for the International Livable Winter Cities Association. This position has taken me to northern China, Scandinavia, northern Japan and Siberia.
Do you bike to work every day: Yes – whenever possible. When I lived in Prince George I averaged about 4000km per year on the bike. However I did not cycle in the snow.
Why do you bike to work: When I “officially” retired I was putting on about a pound per month. So I needed to cycle to maintain my weight. It is a great way to relax after a day’s work. I like to extend my ride home to explore the trails and bike routes in town. There are lots of options in Campbell River.
What is your biggest challenge in cycling to work: Our society is so fast paced – agendas are packed – the automobile to so convenient and not all work places are bike friendly. You need to be well organized and you need to make the time to cycle to work
Clothing issues: It is tough when you need to wear collar tie at work. However organization and arranging to leave clothes at work to change in to really helps.
Weather and cycling: Good shoe covers or bootees are essential in wet weather. You also have to clean your bike more when it’s wet.
Any advice for new commuter cyclists: It is so satisfying to cycle. You don’t feel guilty about not exercising. You benefit your health and help to make your community more sustainable.
